Philosophy
Individuals with learning disabilities
and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders may struggle to be successful in school and in their work. These challenges can create significant stress for the individual, his/her family, teachers, and employers. I believe that competence in learning and successful performance are achieved through a combination of: • Self-understanding and acceptance of challenges and recognition of strengths; • Utilization of available school and community resources; • Proficiency in skills and compensatory strategies; • Development of the critical art of self-advocacy. Ongoing communication with all persons involved in the education and support of individuals with whom I am working is a central component of my practice. It has been my experience that shared understanding of the individual’s difficulties, strengths, goals, and needed accommodations among parents, teachers, and other professionals greatly facilitates success. Helping each person experience confidence and competence in achieving academic and performance goals at the level of his/her potential is the ultimate goal of my work. |
